A decorative concrete overlay isn't one product with one look. The same cement-based resurfacing system can be sprayed, knocked down, hand-troweled, or carved and stained to look like wood planks. Each finish looks different, feels different underfoot, and suits different parts of a South Louisiana home.

1. Spray Texture Overlay (Hallmark System)
Our Hallmark System spray texture overlay is the workhorse of concrete resurfacing. It's a layered, cement-based system from Concrete Technology Inc. (CTi) applied in stages: a leveling coat first, then a colored texture sprayed over the surface, then accent tones that give it depth instead of a flat, painted look.

3. Trowel Texture Overlay

How Louisiana Weather Should Factor Into Your Choice
South Louisiana is hard on outdoor concrete. Long stretches of heat, heavy rain, high humidity, and near-constant sun all show up as fading, staining, mildew, and slick spots. A few rules of thumb:
Around water, choose texture. For pool decks and anything that stays wet, a spray or knockdown texture gives the best combination of traction and comfort.
Under a roof, you have more freedom. Covered porches and patios are great spots for trowel texture and wood-look finishes, where the look is the priority.
Sealing matters. A quality sealer protects the color and helps the surface resist stains and moisture. Plan on resealing periodically to keep an outdoor overlay looking new.
The slab underneath still matters most. An overlay is only as good as the concrete it bonds to. Slabs with major settling or heaving sections usually need repair or replacement first. That's why we inspect every slab on-site before recommending a finish.
What About Coatings Instead of an Overlay?
Overlays are cement-based and change the texture and look of the surface. For some spaces, especially garages, shops, and commercial floors, a coating is a better fit:
Epoxy flake floor coating for garages and commercial floors that need to resist chemicals, stains, and heavy wear.
Pigmented concrete coating for a clean, solid-color finish on patios, driveways, walkways, and interior floors.
Stained concrete and polished concrete for interior floors where you want to enhance the concrete itself.

What to Expect Once You Pick a Finish
Whichever finish you choose, the prep is the same, and it matters more than the finish itself. We grind out and V-groove existing cracks and fill them with a two-part epoxy and chopped fiberglass before the overlay goes down, then apply the base coat, the decorative finish, and a sealer.
